I feel sorry for those frightened confused bats who will now bear the brunt of people's ignorance due to the slant of this story. If the woman in this story doesn't want to deal with wildlife, then move to the city where it's not as prevalant. Reply...
Bats have been known to use closed patio umbrellas as daytime roosts, thinking that they have found a safe spot to sleep after eating thousands of mosquitoes around the yard all night. Apparently they also use grill covers on occasion as well, and they were undoubtedly more frightened by this encounter than the homeowner. It is good that she sought prompt medical advice after the incident, but the claim that 24 people die per year of bat bites and rabies in the US is incorrect and your reporters should be more careful to give accurate information on such important subjects. Morning Fellow Posters! This is a long post, but I think it's worth your time. I feel there is much more going on at BC/BS than first meets the eye, and I think a lot more research needs to go into their board and it's policies.
I was curious and wanted to know who was on the board of BC/BS of ND, so I started looking. It's hard to find out if you are searching BC/BS, because they are tied to NORIDIAN, which does have ties to MEDICARE. Here's a little about Noridian and their board.
About Noridian - Board of Directors
Noridian is governed by a broadly based board, representing business, government, health care and education. Board members are committed to continually improving the quality of service Noridian provides to its customers, while also growing the company.
The Board meets no less than six times a year; committees meet three to five times a year. Each Director serves on two committees, namely: Audit & Compliance, Governance & Nominating, Human Resources & Compensation, Finance & Investment and the Quality Committee.
Officers of the Board The present composition of the Board of Directors is eight Consumer Directors and five provider Directors. Robert Grossman, M.D. a Hettinger physician, is Chairman of the Board. Dennis Elbert, Ph.D., the Dean of College of Business and Public Administration of the University of North Dakota is Vice Chairman.

This is one part of the article, it mentions BC/BS, and mentions the GOVERNMENT SERVICES DIVISION of BC/BS.
" 1998
Noridian LogoBCBSND changes its corporate structure to become a not-for-profit mutual company, and calls itself Noridian Mutual Insurance Company. The company continues to use the name BCBSND when working in North Dakota.
The Government Services division begins processing Medicare Part B claims for Iowa, and hires 150 new employees." end quote.
Mary Wakefield is a listed board member. She has recently been picked by B.O. to run HRSA. Get this JOE: SHE WAS ALSO A SUPER DELEGATE FOR THE 2008 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION. So before the dems like JOE jump all over this as a republican issue, and try to say it's the fault of the free market and capitalism, I think we need to take a look at exactly who was involved in the decision making at BC/BSND and their political motives for those decisions. That AH doesn't deserve a dime!!! BCABS really screwed up this time!!!! When your fired, you get your butt out of there with nothing!! Reply...

Proud,
I think it is the three stooges and not Gilligan at all. You know, Polosi, Reid and Obama. LOL Now you can start calling me names but was just too good a line to pass up. The part that makes me so angry is that we (people who pay the premiums,) struggle to pay our fee every month. Now we see that they waste the funds like it is waste water. I have a sister in law who pays over $600.00 per mo. for her alone. she is in good health and 62 years old. She works two jobs just to be able to pay the bill. Unbeleivable. Is it any wonder the folks of this country are ready to have a Tea party? It surprised and angered me a great deal that the board of directors okayed this contract. I guess I don't even blame him I guess if they offered it to me I would take it too. However, the board should be run out of town on a rail. How sad for many of usl Reply...
Who the hell is running this country? Gilligan?

Apparently excess leads to success.. Just to bad they are doing it by screwing a lot of people with something a lot of people desperately need.
I think the entire board of BCBS needs to be let go and get new people on there. Guess I know this time I will vote! Fellow BCBS members, we are given that annoying paper once a yr, time for change here. Reply...
I disagree with you on this F&B, this guy was making $600,000.00 + a year. I don't know if you're from No. Dak., but the average salary last time I looked was about $34,000.00 a year. The head of a non-profit in N.D. is not worth what they were paying this guy, plus they are continually raising premiums and cutting out what they would cover. The teacher salary debate does not belong in this discussion, I believe that the state of N.D. has one of the lowest teacher pay rates in the nation, unless your a college head, absolutly no comparison in salaries to what Mike Unhjem was raking in. And I take issue with you calling North Dakotans a bunch of babies. People in North Dakota work damn hard, they don't need a big company like BC/BS screwing them over every time they want more bucks for their trips and bonuses - sorry, thats just plain greed. He had a contract that they had to honor, all exec's do. Blue Cross Blue Shield has almost the lowest premiums in the United States. The vacation was for going above and beyond and is typical in lots of jobs. Some call it merit, some call it bonuses... North Dakotans carry on like a bunch of babies. They want to pick and choose who can make what salary. Do you object to Teachers only working 7 months and 1 week out of the year with every holiday off? Instead of worrying yourselves over what a skilled worker is making achieve to rise yourself to that level. I get up everyday hoping to make a fortune today, and when I achieveit through no help of yours, I don't want a bunch of crybabies screaming foul. My son is going to go to Medical School and if he accomplishes his goal I hope he makes a cool quarter mil a year, He has the brains, he has the talent and he has the opportunity why does anyone think they deserve a piece of HIS pie. This is what happens to people who realize that they did not do what successful people did to get ahead, unstead of improving themselves, they elect ROBIN HOOD to make it fair... I am not there, I never want to be there. Reply...
Blue Cross/Blue Shield has been begging for a rate increase. Isn't about time that the clients had a say as to what this monoply is doing with all the increases they are wanting. To the 2.2 million dollar severance I say it is time to take a serious look at the entire board at BLUE. They have stolen from everyone of us and expect we will sit back and do nothing. It is time to clean up their act or move on. Perhaps, we need additional insurance companies in this state. We do not have to take their actions any longer. Reply...
Dawn, its nice having new blood on these posts, welcome.

I can not believe that some one who gets fired actually gets paid 2 million for shafting the public, when he was overpaid in the first place. Is this world as crazy as it looks??? Who on Gods green earth is that great to justify this kind of stupidity. This is pointing in one direction, some more premium increases, when there are already so many people who can not afford health care, and end up on the social service roster. So now the board of directors dont know if they should pay the new CEO the same wage that the last one had,, What ever happened to the rule that you get what you EARN???? It is no wonder that the world is in such a mess, this is one prime example of corruption with to much power. I think a good house cleaning would be in order to get things on the right track, and not reward some one with a hefty pay package for getting fired. Reply...
I am not against rich that earn their money, or work hard.
I feel anyone that was fired, or did a terrible job should not have any severence HUGE bonus.
We are the pions. Many live from paycheck to paycheck and t hese idiots do this..... It is just plain wrong.
If we don't work anymore, WE DON'T HAVE TO PAY TAXES, so this will not be on our heads..... of course only on the heads of our kids and grandkids, so I guess we will keep working like it or not. Reply...
Sorry for the double post. Is BC/BS non-profit?
Non-profit:
"Operated as nearly as possible at cost; an organization not seeking profit and which does not disgorge excess income to its members, in the form of dividends or otherwise. "
Does that sound like BC/BS to you? Maybe I'm wrong about their non-profit status, I thought I heard they were. Anyway, I think they screwed over lots folks in North Dakota. Reply...
2.2 million. Thats an awful lot of money to get for getting your arse fired! What would happen to all of us if we got fired? We get zip, zero. This is a pathetic way to handle his dismissal, I hope heads keep rolling over at BC/BS. Sounds like there is a lot of FAT at the top that needs to be trimmed off. Mike Unjeim should be slinking out of town with his tail between his legs, he is nothing more than a theif in a business suit. The board needs to resign and try and save face, they are the ones who approved all the raises Mike got. Tacky, Tacky, Tacky, Tacky BC/BS. Reply...
That CEO should load his possesions on a Uhaul and split town. This is going to be a sore point to alot of BCBC premium payers.
I do applaud Insurance Commisioner Hamm for saying that he wants to conduct an audit of BCBS. This insurance commisioner is looking out for the people of North Dakota. He turned down the 14 percent rate hike BCBS had requested.
BCBS has alot of egg on its face. The fallout from the Island trip and the CEO pay really burnt alot of policyholders. Now this $2.2 Million Severence is going to make the pot boil over.
People in North Dakota are working to feed their family. Health insurance premiums are outrages. Now this corporate idiotcy will result in people waking up.
Is the Uhaul loaded yet????
